Kaapelitehdas on hyvin palvellut tehdas Ruoholahdessa. Alussa siellä valmistettiin merikaapelia, kunnes toiminta lopetettiin 1990. Kulttuuripiirin edustajat valtasivat tilan itselleen työtiloiksi, ja lukuisien neuvottelujen tuloksena rakennuksesta tuli merkittävä kulttuurikeskus, jossa on museoita, teatteri, näyttely- ja työtiloja.
Itse tutustuin tilaan jo 1990 luvun alussa, mutta syksyllä 2001 aloin miettiä, kuinka tila yhdessä siellä tapahtuvan toiminnan välillä puhuttelee minua. Tutustuin tilan historiaan ja perehdyin rakennuksen rakenteisiin ja pohjakaavaan.
Toteutin tilateoksen, jossa toistui rakennuksen rytmi sekä pohjakaava. Halusin myös, että kokija voi olla osa teosta.
Installaatiosta tuli paikkasidonnainen. Siksi AjatusKaapeli on ollut vain kerran esillä keväällä 2002 Kaapelitehtaan Puristamossa. Nyt siitä on jäljellä vain valokuvat. Teoksen materiaalit ovat uudelleen kierrätetty.
Kaapelitehdas is an old sea cable factory in Ruoholahti, Helsinki. The factory was closed down in 1990.
Factory was stormed a group of the people representing for culture and it was reorganised as working places to the artists and the small entrepreneurs. Now there are many museums and the theatre etc.
A final result the factory has got a new image as a cultural centre.
I became inspired of the factory as a building. What it has been and what it is nowadays. The rhythm of the huge spaces tells its own history.
I made installation which repeats factory’s ground and rhythm. I wanted that installation is pond to the house and that why a work of art has been demonstrated only once in Kaapelitehdas Puristamo 2002. Now I have only pictures left of the work of art. The materials have been recycled.
